Quantitative EEG (qEEG) refers to signal processing and extraction of features from the electrical activity in the brain. Many features such as power for specific frequency bands, coherence among channels, phase differences, hemispheric asymmetry, and a number of other features are extracted from EEG activity of the patient and compared to a normative database. Tables of statistical analysis, topographies and color-graduated representation of EEG features are generated to help identify possible disturbances in EEG related to dysfunctions in the brain. Topographies are commonly used to visualize deviations from the norm or other features of interest as compared with the normative database. These features may represent functional abnormalities in specific areas of the brain and they can aid diagnostic decisions making and useful in setting treatment protocols and interventions.
At our center, we use a multimodal approach to assessing brain functions. Our brain mapping (qEEG, EEG, ERP) assessment uses a proprietary platform developed by Brain Resource Limited. This platform includes comparison of patient data to the data in the Brain Resource International Database which has an unprecedented breadth of standardized, integrated data with respect to electrical brain function measures and autonomic measures, as well as psychological and neuropsychological measures.
These measures of electrical brain function over fractions of a second time scale are selected to tap the brain's core networks and processes. Brain (EEG and ERP) and body measures (of electrodermal arousal, heart rate, respiratory rate) are undertaken simultaneously using non-invasive recording discs placed on the scalp and skin.
